The Shipping Forecast for Lundy. January 2025 - March 2026
The work takes its inspiration from the beloved Shipping Forecast and records the main weather systems that tracked across the British Isles for 14 months commencing in January 2025 and ending March 2026.
The information was obtained from the Meteorological Office website, primarily the Surface Pressure Charts and the Shipping Forecast for the sea area Lundy which borders the North Cornish coast.
My studio faces Northwest with clear views of the coastline and of the incoming weather. The changeable atmospheric character of North Cornwall has been a theme in my work for many years and has often been expressed in the form ofvisual diaries that reflect the passage of time and the changing seasons.
The painting commences slightly off centre at the beginning of January 2025 and progresses in a clockwise spiral until it reaches the outer edge. The central portion conveys the Spring, Summer and Autumn of 2025 while the outer edges indicate the many low-pressure systems and named storms of the Winter of 2025-2026. The colour palette reflects the atmospheric conditions at the time of painting.
